1511501 Lubricants EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 4 April 1975 [25 April 1974] 13898/75 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise sludge dispersing additives prepared by oxidizing with air as sole oxidizing agent a solution of 4 to 60 weight per cent of a copolymer of 30 to 80 weight per cent of ethylene, 70 to 20 weight per cent of C 3-18 -olefin and 0 to 15 weight per cent of C 5-12 non-conjugated diolefin, having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 500,000, in a mineral lubricating oil of viscosity 50 to 1000 SUS at 100‹F, at a temperature of 80 to 300‹C to form an oxidized solution containing 0À01 to 10À0 weight per cent of oxygen, and aminating the oxidized solution with 0À1 to 4 weight per cent based on the copolymer of a C 2-60 , N 1-12 amine selected from hydroxy amines having 1 to 4 hydroxy groups and polyamines of formulae where R and RSP1/SP are H, C 1-12 alkyl, C 1-12 alkoxy, C 2-6 alkylene, C 2-12 hydroxyalkylene, C 2-12 aminoalkylene or C 1-12 alkylamino C 2-6 alkylene, G is H or C 1-3 aminoalkylene, s is 2 to 6, t is 0 to 10 and p is I to 4 to provide a product containing 0À03 to 5 weight per cent of nitrogen. The lubricant may be a petroleum oil, carboxylic, carbonic or phosphoric acid ester or polysilicone, and may contain conventional additives. Examples describe additives prepared by reacting oxidized ethylene/propylene/ethylidene norbornene terpolymers and ethylene/propylene copolymers with ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, mixed polyethylene polyamines, N, N- dimethyl 1,3-diaminopropane, dibutylamine, trimethylolmethylamine, tetrahydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, diethanolamine, ethanolamine and hexamethylene diamine; and mineral lubricating oil compositions thereof also containing zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate and ethylene/propylene copolymer or nitrogen-containing acrylate copolymer as viscosity index improver.
