The coupler is in two parts, which are fixed to the ends of the respective lines (5, 6) and which are secured together to couple the two lines (5, 6). One part includes an electo-optical transducer (9), e.g. a light-emitting diode, and the other part includes an opto-electrical transducer (19), e.g. a photo diode, so that signals can be transmitted between the two lines (5, 6) as optical pulses. The two parts of the coupler may each be provided with several transducers, with the two sets of transducers arranged in corresponding facing pairs.
