They may be obtained by oxidation of the corresponding thio compounds with either a peroxy compound in an acid medium or H 2 O 2 in an acid medium. The said thio compounds may be obtained by reacting pentachlorobenzonitrile with H 2 S to give 4-mercapto-2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobenzonitrile followed by reaction with an alkylating agent; or by reacting pentachlorobenzonitrile with an alkyl mercaptan or benzene thiol.
