1449725 Lubricating oils TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 April 1974 [14 Dec 1973] 17470/74 Heading C5F A trialkanolamine of the formula wherein R is a C 1-10 hydrocarbyl radical, RSP1/SP, Z and Y are hydrogen or C 1-4 hydrocarbyl radicals and x is 0 or 1, is added to mineral lubricating oils as a rust inihibitor. 0À01 to 5 wt. per cent of the alkanolamine can be incorporated in mineral oils having an SUS viscosity of 50-300 at 100‹F. and which can also comprise diphenylamine, C 1 to C 12 alkylated diphenylamines and phenyl naphthylamines as antioxidants, methacrylate copolymers and polybutenyl succinimide detergent. Trialkanolamines are prepared by reacting 1,2-epoxyoctane with diethanolamine and by reacting 1,2-epoxybutane with diethanolamine and incorporated in a paraffinic mineral oil, having an SUS viscosity of 40‹ at 210‹ F., and also containing 10 wt. per cent of polybutenyl succinimide.
