Openings are initially formed (5) in the edge of the purse to accommodate the string (8), being either open at the edges or joined in pairs by slots. The string is then introduced by machine between the adjacent openings and these are closed along the periphery, so that the string is alternately exposed on the upper and the lower sides of the purse material. The openings can be formed as slots along the upper purse edge. Where there are slots between adjacent openings, they can be closed by sections of adhesive tape, or a closing strip can be fitted along the edge of the purse. Alternatively, the edge can be folded over and welded or glued in place.
