Antibiotic 32204 (I) is produced by aerobic cultivation of Aspergillus nidulans var. echinulatus A32204 (NRRL 3860) or a (I)-forming mutant in an aq. nutrient medium contg. C-and N-sources and inorganic salts until the medium displays substantial antibiotic activity, and then isolating (I). (I) may be converted into esters by treating with esterifying agents (e.g. acetic anhydride/pyridine). (I) may be sepd. into the components A 32204A (la) and A32204B (ib) and, possibly, further components, by countercurrent distribution and/or chromatography. (I) or esters thereof may be converted into hydrogenation prods. by treating with hydrogenating agents. (I) and its derivs. have specific antifungal activity against yeast-like fungi such as Candida albicans, C. utilis, Torulopsis dattila, T. sphaerica, Endomyces bispora and Hansenula californica, coupled with very low toxicity in comparison with known antifungal antibiotics, and can be used for the treatment of yeast-like fungal infections, as feed additives, as food preservatives, and as disinfectants. The in vitro MIC's of (I) against ca 20 clinical isolates of Candida albicans are 0.2-0.3 gamma/ml.
