In an eight, section hatch cover for ships one group of sections 6, 7; 8, 9 folds in a fore and aft direction, the other group of sections 1, 2; 4, 5 folds in an athwartships direction, hatch beams 10, 11 carried by roller tracks (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), on the longitudinal sides of the hatch coaming 3 are arranged in closed position to carry the group of sections 6, 7; 8, 9 and are provided with T-shaped locking bolts (17), Fig. 3 (not shown), for releasable connection alternatively to sections 2, 5 of the other group of sections or to the coaming. Each T-shaped locking bolt (17) is fitted with limited movement to bracket (15) and end plate (16) of each end of hatch beams 10, 11 and in one locking position connects the hatch beams with the sections 2, 5 by means of horizontal flange portion (18) and in another locking position co-operates with lugs (21) in the coaming by means of locking plate (20) at the end of the vertical web portion (19) of the bolt. The arrangement may be utilized on weatherdeck covers as well as on tweendeck covers and may be used to form removable tweendecks such as those for carrying motor vehicles.
