The safety device at the inlet point of a circulating hand runner of a moving staircase has a flexible flap enclosing part of the hand runner in the inlet point, which can pivot in the runner direction and which is fitted after a spring supported operating mechanism for a safety contact to stop the staircase. Specifically, the flap can be locked by an operating mechanism for a safety contact and is unlocked on operating the safety contact. The flap is spaced behind a nonlockable second pivotable flap whose pivoting operates the safety contact. The hand runner opening in the first flap is greater than the opening in the second flap.
