In the activated sludge effluent treatment plant disclosed in DT 1813635 which comprises a circular section tanks divided by a partition into a central aeration chamber having a high output centrifugal aerator with riser pipe extending to just above the tank bottom and fitted with horizontal radially extending pipes ending at adjustable heights in an annular after-clarifier of triangular longitudinal section surrounding the aeration chamber, together with a sludge collector outside the circular tank connected to the aeration chamber by one pipe and to the riser pipe of the centrifuge by a second pipe which is bent upwards in the sludge collection zone and has a height-adjustable overflow device in the region of the water surface, - the improvement whereby the after-clarifier is constructed with two launders connected together by a siphon pipe, the inner and outer launders being fixed to the partition and tank walls respectively, while on the effluent feed side a flow-dividing construction is provided connected by one pipe to the aeration chamber and by a second pipe to the inner launder with a flow-meter incorporated in the feed pipe and operating a shut-off valve in the siphon pipe in accordance with the feed rate.
