The transformer, for replacing conventional sets of transformers which detect all types of short circuits in high voltage lines, has a circular magnetic core encircling the three phase-lines which lie symmetrically about the core axis. The three secondary windings are wound around the core each opposite one h.v. line so that they are spaced 120 deg. apart. Three-air gaps in the core are situated symmetrically between secondaries, 120 deg. apart and running parallel to the axes of the h.v. lines. Changes in the field patterns cutting the three core segments produce different characteristic voltages in the secondaries from which the failure can be diagnosed.
