The gauge comprises a dial indicator mounted on a U-shaped bracket borne by a bush on a shaft. The bracket fits between the train wheel and the lower rail flange. When the shaft is raised by means of a lever, the wheel is lifted from the rail. The dial indicator shows the deformation of the bracket caused by the lifting force and the actual wheel pressure is indicated as the wheel separates from the rail.
