The counterblow hammer has an upper hammer which forms an extension of the piston of the drive cylinder at the top of the forging machine. The rolls guiding the connecting belts are arranged on the projecting ribs of the cylinder. The cylinder of the machine has a piston whose lower end forms the upper hammer. The cylinder has projecting ribs which have bearings for the belt rolls. One roll each is arranged on either side of the cylinder. The hammers are actuated by one pair of belts and are guided by the vertically moving lower hammer and by the vertical columns of the machine. The ends of the belt are held in the projecting lugs of the hammers, and the belt guide rolls are freely accessible from the top and they can be readily replaced. The bolted connection between the flange and the column top is not heavily loaded because the reaction force of the piston is balanced by the tensile forces in the belts.
