A speech analysis method in which signals resulting from speech in a microphone are reproduced as speech patterns on an oscilloscope screen, forms and stores a trace corresponding to a speech pattern on the face of the picture tube, and then a mask corresponding to the shape of the trace is applied to the tube, the outline of the trace not being covered. When a further pattern is superimposed, portions which do not correspond, occur and photocells are placed behind the mask to correspond to these portions, and deliver a signal in response to these portions. Strip type photocells may be used to reproduce characters corresponding to certain shapes.
