A Semens-Martin furnace is operated by providing a solid (scrap) charges at both ends of the furnace near the burner. After charging has been completed but before effecting regenerative melting and refining of the charge, the charges are at least partially melted by igniting the burners at both ends and removing the combustion gases from above and below the charge. The melting time for a charge can be reduced, although there is an increase in oxygen consumption, since the heaped charged are melted internally by the burner and the unmolten shell of the charge helps to protect the furnace from heat.
