The base plate has grooves following the pattern of a square grid and the grooves are of such width that the bottom edge portions of the walls can be inserted and held in position by the sides of the grooves. The walls may have mitred ends so that square corners can be built up without gaps. At the intersection of any two grooves the four corners formed by the intersection may be rounded so as to fit a pillar to be supported at the intersection. The arrangement of the model can easily be changed from one lay-out to another in connection with a planning exercise.
