To reduce the gain dependent on the maximum signal amplitude of the target or to emphasise the detection threshold in the immediate range of the target, there is intermediate storage of received signal trains of several radar periods within a narrow azimuth interval, rotating with the aerial, of the width of the aerial lobe, followed by the signal maximum in this interval being determined independently for each radial quantisation step or range circle. According to the amplitude of this signal maximum, the gain of the signal taken from the middle of the interval and not erased in the store is reduced and the detection threshold emphasised so that this threshold intersects the aerial lobe in the top narrow part.
