At the end of the rolling operation, finished steel strips are being coiled. When the leading end of the strip reaches the coiling drum, deflector plates have to bend it around the drum to form the start of the coil. Since strips of up to about 13mm thickness are coiled, the initial deflection impact causes considerable wear on the coiling equipment. By reducing the thickness or by tapering the leading end of the strip, less deflection force is required to start the coil, hence a less powerful coiling mechanism can be employed. The taper leads in from a section reduced by about 20% of the normal thickness over a length of 0.5-5m.
