Carboxylic acid derivs. of formulae (I) and (II) (where R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl; R3 is H or 1-3C alkyl; R4 is OH, 1-18 C alkoxy, 5-8C cyclo-alkoxy, or a group -NHR5 in which R5 is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; n is 0-6; and m is 1-4), e.g. ethyl 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-di-t-butylphenylthio)-acetate or dimethyl 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-di-t-butyl-phenylthio)-glutarate, are new cpds. (I) and (II) lower blood cholesterol levels and in some cases triglyceride levels, and can be used for treating primary and secondary hyperlipidaemias and for the prophylaxis and treatment of arteriosclerotic disorders, esp. of the coronary vessels.
