1502375 Waterproofing cables WESTERN ELECTRIC CO INC 1 April 1975 [4 April 1974] 13368/75 Heading D1L The interstices of a stranded core of a communications cable are filled with a waterproofing compound in apparatus comprising, as shown in Fig. 3, a pressure relief chamber 31, a filling chamber 32, a second pressure relief chamber 33 and a cooling chamber (not shown) through which the cable core is advanced in sequence, the filling chamber 32 being connected by feeder pipes 117 to supply manifold 121 containing the waterproofing compound under pressure. The filling chamber 32 contains a tubular filling member 112 with orifices 114 therein so that the water proofing compound therein is directed in an upstream direction of the advance of the cable core. This flow due to the orifices 114 combined with the flow due to the advance of the cable core and the pressurisation of the waterproofing compound supply causes the compound to flow longitudinally of the cable in the direction of travel, opposite thereto and also inwardly of the longitudinal axis to displace therein within the interstices and so fill the interstices with compound. The pressure relief chambers 31 and 33 contain pressure resistant seals to the cable core to provide equalisation of pressure between the filling chamber 32 and the atmosphere and allow surplus compound to be returned via chains 107 to the supply manifold 121.
