Forge power hammer for ironworks functions automatically as dictated by externally selected programme and has descent governing safety feature. Comprises a block mass (11), reciprocating vertically via belt drive(10) between vertical columns with a double acting double hydraulic jack braking system(17, 18, 19), locating at the column heads: the travelling block(11), embodying an electrical contact(30), and several vertically interspaced static contacts(21 to 29) locating on a column. The block contact(30), traverses the column contacts(21-29) sequentially completing electric circuits which link the braking, drive and control systems; thus an electronic computer with logic circuits, memories and external control authorises various functions including a descent velocity governed auto-braking facility.
