Biologically decomposable builder for washing compsns. - from carbohydrates, unsatd. dicarboxylic acids and alkaline earth hydroxides

Builder for a washing compsn. exerting sequestering action, is prepd. by reacting in an aq. medium (1) a carbohydrate, (2) a alpha,beta-unsatd. discarboxylic cpd. and (3) an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, and converting the reaction product into an alkali metal or ammonium salt. This builder is incorporated into washing compsns. along with organic, water-soluble, synthetic detergents (anionic, nonionic, hybrid-ionic and/or ampholytic). This builder can fully replace the conventional phosphate builder in washing compsns.; it can be biologically decomposed in effluents, it is nontoxic to aquatic lifse; it is relatively inexpensive.
