The method of measuring the maximum load experienced by an element during a given time period is based on the Brinell ball technique. The load to be measured is applied to a Brinell ball of known diameter, acting on a disc of known hardness during the given period. The diameter of the indentation made on the disc is then measured and from this the maximum value of the force having acted on the ball during the measurement period is calculated, this force being equal to the load to be determined. The apparatus for operating this technique comprises a Brinell ball (10), a support (6) and a jacket (7), the support holding the ball (10) by means of a clamp (11) and the jacket holding a metallic disc (13) of known Brinell hardness and adjusted so as to slide within a recess (14) made in the jacket (7). The disc (13) is held by a clamp (15) fixed to the jacket.
