SPIT MOUNTING ARRANGEMENT FOR USE IN A BROILER

1376709 Spits McGRAW-EDISON CO 15 June 1973 [10 July 1972] 28624/73 Heading A4D A table model electric broiler (10) Fig.1 (not shown) has a metal spit (11) of generally square section but having circular section lengths 38 for riding on bearing brackets 40 connected to the end walls 16 of the broiler chamber. Spacer rings 41 secured to the spit straddle one bracket to limit axial movement of the spit. Each bracket is trough shaped, opening upwards so that the spit can be put in place or removed by vertical movement. A drive unit 46 comprising a motor and speed reducing gear train is supported between the broiler chamber wall 16 and an outer wall formed by pedestal 22 and has a power output gear with square socketed boss 52. A drive shaft 54 has a length of square section 53 slidably engaged in boss 52. A coupling 56 is attached to its inboard end and has a cylindrical outside surface to fit freely through the opening 58 in the end wall 16 and a square hole 60 axially disposed to slidably engage with the square end 34 Fig.4 of the spit. A circular part 62 of the drive shaft 54 fits in the bore of and rotatably supports knob 64 whilst it is axially restrained with regard to shaft 54 by snap springs 66 received in shaft grooves. The knob is rectangular at section 67 to fit a rectangular opening 68 in a pedestal 22 and with shaft 54 and coupling 56 is urged inwards by a compression spring 72 so that when so mated square hole 60 drivably engages the square end of the spit. When the knob is moved axially against the spring it may be so retained by rotation through 90 degrees to a position where its rectangular part 67 is out of alignment with the rectangular hole Fig.4 where it may be held by detent recesses (74) Fig.5 (not shown) thus disengaging the drive-shaft from the spit end and leaving the spit free to be removed. To assist in axial movement of the knob, inclined camming surfaces may be formed on the knob nose to co-operate with similar surfaces in the hole through the pedestal. The sheet metal broiler chamber has top, bottom and side walls with an open front for access to the interior. A downward opening door encloses the front opening and has latches engaging with openings in the casing. The end pedestals 22 are made from a heat insulating phenolic material, they act as handles for the broiler and support it clear of any surface on which it may rest in use. Upper and lower electric heating elements are provided in the broiler adjacent to the top and bottom inner surfaces respectively and appropriate electrical connections and thermostatic controls are provided. A point at one end of the spit serves to pierce the product to be broiled and its square centre span provides for driving a pair of barbs (36) Fig.2 (not shown). A spit manipulating tool is disclosed which consists of a pair of parallel arms (78) attached to a longitudinal member (84) having a central loop handle (82) Fig.2 (not shown). The free ends of the arms are formed into U-shapes to support the spit at its ends when it is being placed in or removed from the broiler.
