The disc is centred by pin 8 and held by pins 9 received in a ring 11 in a support 10. A support or guide 14 movable by an electromagnet against the action of a spring 17 holds the disc a fixed distance from the sensing head. The sensing head is radially movable and is supplied with air from a compressor 35. When the centering and rotating device is retracted stripper 40 removes the disc from the pins and the support 14 is retracted. The air flow then serves to separate the support 14 and disc against the action of electrostatic forces created by rotation.
