1513772 A starter for an internal combustion engine ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 13 May 1975 [2 July 1974] 19996/75 Heading F1K A starter for an internal combustion engine comprises a pinion 14 which is displaceably and rotatably mounted with respect to a drive-shaft 3 of the starter and which is carried by a gear shaft 13, the pinion being connected to an engaging rod 16 and coupled by way of a coupling in the form of a combined friction clutch and gear clutch with a carrier 9 which is connected to the drive-shaft. The coupling has a first toothed coupling member 38 which is splined on a portion 35 of the gear-shaft so as to be longitudinally displaceable thereon and is in toothed engagement with a second toothed coupling member 42 which is rotatably mounted on the gearshaft and simultaneously carries inner clutch plates 45 of the friction clutch. Outer clutch plates 51 of the friction clutch are connected to the carrier and the first toothed coupling member is movable in a similar direction to the engaging direction of the starter pinion to engage the gear clutch. A split resilient ring 56 serves as the centrifugal weight of a centrifugal separator for assisting disengagement of the gear clutch.
