The starter unit has a pinion rotatably and slideably carried on the start motor shaft, the pinion having a tooth coupling capable of engaging an element of the shaft which element is actuated by a lever coupled with a solenoid switch. The coupling is arranged on a sleeve secured to the pinion. One coupling half is carried on a long-pitch helical screw section of the sleeve. The other half is coupled with the element via a pin-in-inclined-slot connection, the element being carried on a spur gear section of the motor shaft. The element may be formed as a bush which envelops the tooth coupling.
