A preservative, particularly for skin products and esp. cosmetic products, which is normally insol. in water is solubilised by the following process. A dialcohol cpd. is dissolved in water and the preservative is dissolved in the resulting soln; excess water is then added so as to first precipitate the preservative as a colloidal phase, and then with the excess water the microcells redissolve. The solubilised preservative is particularly used for skin preparations, esp. cosmetics of pH about 7. Known preservatives such as sodium p-hydroxy-methylbenzoate and sodium p-hydroxy-propylbenzoate require a pH of about 9 and also are inhibited by sugar emulsifiers or even cosmetic materials.
