Synchronous machine with a number of field windings on the rotor producing alternate polarities on the cores made from magnetic material. The cores are mounted around the axis of rotation of the rotor to form a magnetic field extending from the cores in an axial direction. The stator has a number of windings on a ring shaped core made from magnetic material. They are mounted around the axis of the stator in such a way that parts of the windings will lie near a surface of the core. The rotor and the stator are mounted with their respective cores more or less coaxial, with the rotor cores opposite the surface of the stator core.
