1283567 Polymerizing olefins MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Dec 1969 [19 Dec 1968] 62127/69 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized or copolymerized in an inert liquid reaction medium in the presence of a catalyst which consists of (a) a halogen compound of titanium or vanadium, as transition metal component, chemically bound and supported on solid magnesium carbonate particles, the transition metal component or the magnesium carbonate particles or both having been treated in a liquid or gaseous phase with an electron donor which is an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid or an alkyl ester thereof, an aliphatic or cyclic ether, an aliphatic or aromatic ketone, alcohol, nitrile, amine or phosphine, an aliphatic aldehyde or an aliphatic acid amide, and (b) an organo-metallic compound which is an organo-aluminium or an alkyl zinc compound. The Specification contains many examples describing the production of polyethylene, polypropylene, and copolymers of ethylene with propylene or 1-butene, utilizing a wide variety of transition metal components, electron donors and organo-metallic compounds.
