1312730 Mixed oxides of magnesium and aluminium MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Nov 1970 [29 Nov 1969] 50242/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Mixed oxides of magnesium and aluminium for use as catalyst supports (see Division C3) are prepared by coprecipitation or co-gelation of the hydrous oxides from aqueous solution, filtering and drying, to give an oxide of formula mMgO.AlO 1À5 . nH 2 O, where m is 0À02 to 100 and n is 0 or a number preferably not greater than 4. The precipitation is carried out by mixing solutions of Mg and Al compounds then adding an alkali, e.g. NH 4 OH or Na 2 CO 3 , or by adding a solution of an aluminium compound, e.g. Al(NO 3 ) 3 , to a suspension of an insoluble basic magnesium compound, e.g. the basic carbonate, when co-gelation occurs. The average particle diameter of the mixed oxide is preferably 0À1 to 100 Á.
