1380078 Modulating light AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 17 Dec 1971 [12 Jan 1971] 58799/71 Heading H4F In an improvement in, or modification of, the device described in the parent case, the counterelectrode, i.e. the one adjacent the electrolyte layer (45) and not in direct contact with the viewed electrochromic layer, is formed of electrochromic material and/or graphite in a binder. The electrode may be formed by depositing the materials in solution or powder form on a suitable substate such as tin oxide coated glass, and subsequently curing it, or by forming sheets of a suitable mixture which are placed under pressure and heat either side of a conductive grid so as to fill the apertures thereof. The graphite electrodes may have electrochromic material embedded therein or coated thereon, e.e. by adding powder to the uncured electrode, or deposition from solution ("ammonium tungstate"), or vacuum (WO 3 ), on the cured electrode. Many other examples of materials and methods used for preparing the electrodes are given, as well as constructions of the whole device which differ in detail from those found in the parent case. The device may be formed as a dot matrix, or a "figure of eight".
