Electrically insulated coupling for pipes - reduces incidence of corrosion by preventing flow of electrical corrosion enhancing currents

The insulated coupling electrically insulates metal pipes used to convey liquid or gaseous media. It comprises a circular, cylindrical plastics body (1) with a central bore flanked on both sides by flanges (2) to which it is coupled by screw connections (7). Hexagonal nuts (3) close on both flanges and have threaded sections (4) for receiving the retaining nuts on the pipe ends. The screws are typically screwed into tapped blind holes of integrally cast retention nuts (8), having roughened surfaces to prevent them from rotating. An electric conductor (6) can be pressed or cast into the plastics body between the flanges and is used to determine the breakdown resistance of the insulated coupling.
