1384614 Pipe joints L BAGNULO 26 June 1972 [9 July 1971] 29808/72 Heading F2G To prevent the coating 5, 5SP1/SP of abutted metal pipes 1,11 from being damaged when they are welded together, sockets 3 are secured on the pipe ends so as to extend beyond them, a non- combustible ring 6 (Fig. 3), which may be in two parts, is placed between the pipe ends to protect them, and the adjoined ends of the sockets are butt-welded together at 7, either directly, Fig. 3, or indirectly through a connector pipe section 10, Fig: 5. Holes 9 are then used to fill the socket spaces with a cold polymerizing resin or other setting material, and the holes are closed off. When the ring 6 is made in two parts, these may be mounted one on the end of each of the pipes. To provide cathodic protection, the ring 6, Fig. 3, may be of a reactive metal, e.g. zinc, contained within a thin steel sleeve which so extends as to make electrical contact with the sockets 3. If the reactive ring is required to be of some length, e.g. as a sleeve 13, Fig. 5, it may instead be mounted within the connector pipe section 10 which has its ends butt-welded at 7, 7SP1/SP to the adjacent ends of the sockets 3, 3SP1/SP. The sleeve 13 may be of platinum coated titanium fed by D.C. from an external source, to act as an anode: it is in this form insulated from the pipe section 10, &c.
