Compounds of the formula FORM:1076829/C2/1 and their acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts, wherein A1 and A2 each represent a bivalent, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical, R1 and R2 represent hydrocarbon radicals or together a cyclic polymethylene radical, which may be interrupted by hetero atoms, are prepared by reacting a diacid of the formula FORM:1076829/C2/2 with a compound Z-B-D wherein Z is OH or halogen, D is -NR1R2 or with a compound wherein D is a radical or atom that may be subsequently replaced by -NR1R2 in the prepared ester; or by reacting a diester of the acid (III) with an amino-alcohol; or by reducing compounds (I) wherein either A1 or A2 is an unsaturated hydrocarbon radical.
