The pulses are admitted to a control circuit which always sets the next following higher damping stage of the damping element when a certain positive or negative threshold voltage of a pulse is exceeded. The rectified pulses are admitted to a maximum-value detector which, when a positive or negative pulse maximum is reached, cuts through a signal-level value derived from the setting of the damping element and the determined maximum level for interpolating in the range between the set damping stage and the damping stage no longer reached. In the circuit to put the method into effect a broadband high-gain amplifier is connected to the adjustable damping element.
