The shackle is a roughly pear-shaped steel forging with a bridge-like section at its lower end which carries a polygonal flat surface. Slots are formed in the lower end to form forks to accept the ends of a U-shaped link. The link is secured by the pin which in turn is retained by a smaller cross pin fitting in a groove in the pin. The flat surface carries the figures indicating the safe working load for a given angle of inclination of the load carrying chains. By forging the load label integral with the shackle it cannot be lost by being separated from the shackle.
