In addition to the magnets, the spreader is equipped with one or more safety grabs (5), slewing on a vertical axis (6). The grab can be mounted alongside a magnet and close to it on the spreader axis, and the space between magnet and grab can be at least equal to half the external diameter of the grab when open. Where there is more than one grab, they can be slewed by a common motor (11), and the jaws of a grab can be offset in relation to each other. The upper edge of the space enclosed by the grab jaws when shut can be level with the lower edge of the magnet, and the opening and closing mechanism can be incorporated in the slewing grab housing, means being included for synchronising jaw operation. The design allows easy extraction of oblong items from boxes close together, using the magnets, without the grab jaws fouling adjoining ones.
