Dry, granulated synthetic tomato paste prod. that can be reconstituted by the addn. of water, contains (I) 20-40 wt% esp. 25-35 cellulose, (II) 10-30 esp. 10-20 wt% starch, and (III) smaller amts. of synthetic tomato flavours and seasonings. Easily reconstituted to a prod. similar in taste and texture to natural tomato paste. Can be stored in e.g. polyethylene bags, instead of metal containers. Can be stored for long periods, Cheaper than the natural prod. All the components are in the form of a dry powder. The mixt. content is pref. 5 wt% (II) pref. consists of cornstarch. (III) pref. consists of 5 wt% paprika, 2-3 wt% sodium chloride, 2-3 wt% onion powder, and 1 wt% citric acid. The prod. may also contain 10 wt% dehydrated molasses, and/or 15 wt% natural sugars, esp. dextrose and sucrose, the wt. ratio of dextrose/sucrose being 1/2.
