An internal combustion machine can be operated to produce exhaust gases with lower content or toxic components by compressing a volume of air in a compression cylinder and passing it into a reaction chamber at higher temps. where fuel is continuously introduced and converted by thermal and/or catalystic reaction into dissociated fuel gases. The fuel gas/air mixt. is passed into an expansion cylinder where it is ignited and performs work as it expands. This results in an easy control of the fuel dissociation by adjusting the pressure in the reaction chamber, the temp. or the fuel feed rate. Using a gaseous fuel results in much less toxic components in the exhaust gases, compared with liq. fuel.
