The trolley has two sets of running gear, one driven by an electric motor and the other trailing, each comprising a yoke with a vertical running wheel and two horizontal guide rollers. The trolley frame has another electric motor geared to two chain and sprocket drives on each side. To each chain is coupled a vertical lifting rod which has at its lower end a finger-shaped hook for lifting beds and a flat-surfaced lug for lifting containers. After lowering the load, the hooks and lugs may be moved aside or rotated about the rod to keep them clear. Motion of the lifting rod support about the chain sprockets causes sideways retraction at the end of the vertical travel.
