The control and monitoring system e.g. for a power station, has a control part acting as a selective control and with its control function separated from its selection return monitoring. A switching matrix is provided for the selection control and a digital computer for selection return monitoring, or alternatively both may be provided with a digital computer. A printer, coupled to the digital computer prints out the selected state before and after the control operation. Signals returning from the selected and controlled units are displayed on a borad or cathode ray tube screen.
