The mechanism has two or more lifting columns, up and down which there travel supports engaging with only one side of the vehicle to be lifted in each case, these columns being joined to each other by an assembly running at right angles to the direction in which the vehicle enters the mechanism. The columns (12), or extension pieces fixed to them, extend to a height above the maximum to which a vehicle can be lifted. They are secured to a cross-member (8) forming the joining assembly between them, and which in turn is secured to parts of the building (2, 6, 7).
