The mortice lock has a catch and locking bolt. The security is improved by an additional housing for the lock mechanism within the usual housing. The locking element is supported by the additional housing (12) which encloses the actuating locking mechanism and which is fitted between the lock housing side plates (2, 3). The cover and the side plates (18) of the additional housing (12) are inserted into the window shaped openings of the lock side cover plate (3) and the other lock side plate (2). The additional housing has stepped lugs (25) which rest on the inner surfaces of the lock cover bottom plates (2, 3).
