The luggage compartment (100) has a housing with a cavity for the luggage, a flap, a locking mechanism (102), an operating element (103), and a cover element (104). The cavity is selectively accessible or inaccessible by movement of the flap. The locking mechanism is fitted at least partially on the flap in such a way that the flap and housing can be selectively locked or unlocked by application of the operating element. The cover element is fitted on the flap in such a way that it covers the locking mechanism and allows the operating element to be accessible for operation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an aircraft with a luggage compartment; (B) a method for the manufacturing of a luggage compartment; and (C) a use for a luggage compartment in a passenger transporting means such as an aircraft.
