Prepn. of 3-keto-17beta-hydroxy-17alpha-alkyl-4-androstenes of formula (I) comprises treating a corresp. 3,17 -diketo -4-androstene with a methylating agent in the presence of analkali salt of a tert. alcohol is new where R1 = H, Me; R2 = H, OH; C1 C2, C6 C7, C9 C10 are single or double bonds. Cpds. (I) are either valuable medicaments or intermediates of the prepn. of other medicaments. This method avoids the use of a protecting gp. for the 3-keto gp. required in previous methods.
