Symmetrical diaryl sulphides prepn. - by reacting aromatic thiols at 500-600 degrees in an inert gas stream

Symmetrical diaryl sulphides (e.g. diphenyl sulphide bis-p-tolyl sulphide or bis-1-naphthyl sulphide) are prepd. by passing aromatic thiols through a reaction zone at 500-600 degrees C in a stream of an inert gas (pref. N2). Symmetrical diaryl sulphides are used as oil additives, intermediates in organic syntheses, insecticides, growth regulants, plasticizers, etc. Diphenyl sulphide is used as a high-boiling inert solvent. Simple process (single-step, easy isolution of end product) suitable for use on a technical scale.
