Thiol cpds. (IV) are prepd. by (a) reacting halogen cpds. (I) with N-contg. heterocyclic thiol cpds. (II), with the addn of a base, to form heterocyclic thio cpds. (III), and (b) decomposing (III) by reaction with a sulphide or hydrogen-sulphide having formula MSH or M2S (where M is NH4, Li or Na) so as to recover the original (II) quantitatively, for renewed reaction with a cpd. (I), in addn. to the desired cpd. (IV). (IV) having formula RSH (where R is opt. substd. 1-18C alkyl or opt. 1-3C alkyl-substd. aryl, but excluding satd. alkylene and opt. substd. arylene) are obtd. in high yields without side-reactions.
