The hydrocarbon feed with Conradson value of =5% is coked in a fluidised bed at 482-649 degrees C, part of the coke is transferred to a heating zone at 55-170 degrees C higher temp., from which part of the coke goes to a gasification zone at still higher temp. and is reacted with steam and oxygen to a hot CO/H2 gas stream. The hot gas passes through the heating zone, raises the temp. of the coke arriving from the fluidised bed, and is drawn off. Part of the heated coke from the gasification zone is passed either (i) direct to the fluidised bed, or (ii) first to the heating zone and then to the fluidised bed. The CO/H2 gas stream is suitable for prodn. of a conc. H2 stream by the water-gas reaction, or for other reactions, and possesses a good heating value. All the coke formed may be converted to gas, or part drawn off, as petroleum coke with improved. All the heat requirements are met by the integrated process and all the oxygen required is fed to the high temp. gasification bed, which eliminates risk of break-through into the product gas.
