The ash agglomerating fluidized bed coal gasification process has been under research and development by Institute of Coal Chemistry, CAS. By the end of 1989, a pilot plant (24 tons coal/day) was set up and put into operation. Tests of air/steam, enriched air/steam, oxygen/steam blown modes were carried out. A wide variety of feedstock, including lignite, bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal, anthracite and petroleum coke with ash content from 1% to 37.88%, ash melting point from 1160℃ to +1500℃ were successfully gasified. This technology has been patented in China. An industrial demonstration gasifier with 100 tons coal per day was constructed in Chenggu Fertilizer Plant, Shaanxi in 2001. This gasifier has been successfully run with a long continuous operating time. This paper describes the R&D of ash agglomerating fluidized bed gasification process. Meanwhile, the gasification reactivity of petroleum coke with steam and carbon dioxide under different conditions was reported. The relationship of gasification reactivity and pore specific surface area of petroleum coke is investigated. The results show that the petroleum coke has comparatively high reaction rate with steam at about 1000℃. Then the gasification of petroleum coke in a fluidized bed pilot plant gasifier was carried out for syngas and hydrogen production.
