Prodn. of (+)-cis-2,8-p-menthadiene-1-ol - by isomerisation of 2 -carene oxide using meta-titanic acid catalyst

2-carene oxide (i) is converted into a product contg. =75% by wt. (+)-cis-2,8-p-menthadiene-1-ol (ii) by contacting (i) with 0.2-10% by wt. metatitanic acid at 25-200 degrees C. The crude cis-isolimonenol-1-ol (ii) formed is easily separated from any by-products, and can be converted to levo-menthol, an active perfumery and flavouring component.
